On Tuesday night, I attended the weekly trivia held on the first floor of
the commons. I went with a group of people from my floor of my dorm, and we
stayed for all four rounds. I liked that there were multiple diDerent categories
of questions, so that each person was able to contribute at some point. There
were two diDerent song/music related rounds, a movie round, and then a
random trivia round. Even though I did not know many of the answers, I still
had a good time. It was good to spend time with new people while also having
fun and working together to come up with answers. Environments like this
make it easier to interact with people I haven’t talked to very much, because it
is not an awkward or uncomfortable situation. I also liked that they allowed
groups to be up to eight people. This gave me the chance to talk to many other
people, rather than the couple that I usually gravitate towards. I would be
interested in attending similar events in the future. I enjoy going to other
activities that are similar to trivia, such as bingo. Overall, trivia was a valuable
experience, and I look forward to attending similar events throughout my time
    here.

  2. For my activity I met with my academic coach on the second floor of Ripich Commons. It was fairly useful, we used the time to come with organization and studying plans. I would do it again, and I scheduled a few more appointments.

  3. Journal 3 what/where was the activity, interesting? , would you go again?
    Pictures included
I went to music bingo. It was freaking amazing. I loved the songs and singing and dancing. I could have won a TV. I want to know why all of my tuition money is going to bingo and raffle prizes but I do love the fact that I can win these things. The bingo was in the cloud lounge and it was cooking hot in there because it was packed with people singing and dancing. I have a few videos of people singing and dancing to my family’s favorite songs that I sent to them because it reminded me of them. I also went to a fair where I got 2 mocktail mojitos and 2 loaded fry baskets. I also made the cutest glasses and swung on glowing swings in the commons. I played air hockey with friends and got an airbrush tattoo of roses on my arm. I loved both of these activities and will definitely be going to more bingo. I want one of those TVs soooo badly.

  4. I attended the first meeting of the UNE bookclub on Wednesday. It was held by the fireplace in the Commons. I really liked being in a group of people who all loved reading as much as I did. I would not attend another meeting though. I believe that bookclubs, unless every single person likes the same kind of book, should feature a diverse array of books. However, this book club is not that. I am not a fan of the genre “romantasy” (romantic fantasy), and based on current voting, that is what we will be reading. I will not attend another meeting, but I still enjoyed going.

On Wednesday, I went to my first college game. Around 7:30pm I went to the girls volleyball game. I went with my roommate Laura, and some other friends Katherine and Allie. The volleyball game was held in the Forum gym. It was fun to finally go to a college game. I never really thought I had time to go to games since the school year started, so I was so happy to go. For volleyball, I only went to my high school volleyball games and the game on Wednesday was a lot more interesting then the ones I have been to before. The game was really good, I can tell how hard the team works to be good. Some of the plays were really intense, I didn’t think a volleyball game could be that intense. Lots of plays seemed to take a long time, because both teams were working hard to score a point.
From this experience I am more excited to go to other college games that will be taking place on campus. This Saturday is the first home football game. I am so excited to go to it because in high school I was on the sidelines cheering. I am excited to finally be in the stands with my friends and supporting my new school. I am excited to be part of a new community, new teams and hanging out with my friends at games.

I forgot to take a photo showing that I attended the volleyball game.

  6. I went to Trivia night with my roommate and people on my floor in the commons. We stayed for all the rounds and we did our best with some really tough questions! What I found fun was that some of these questions were really detailed and had me digging in the depths of my brain to see if I could remember the answer. I would attend another similar event because I met a lot of new people and got to nerd out on how well I knew my shows and movies!

  7. I attended a workshop about time management. The workshop was held on the second floor of the commons in room 206. There, my roommates and I were taught some helpful tips about time management. For example, the workshop leader had us log our classes and personal activities into a time management pie chart. This allowed us to see how much time we should realistically spend studying, working, and when to take some time to ourselves. We also wrote out our schedules so we could physically see where we had free time to study and fit in all activities outside of academics. I really liked this because I was beginning to feel somewhat overwhelmed by my classes and assignments. I found the whole workshop interesting and extremely helpful. The guides were super nice and we were even able to give them some tips from the student’s perspective. For example, my roommate, Hanna helped my other roommate and myself by making us each assignment trackers on google sheets. This is extremely handy because all of my assignments for the entire semester are all in one spot. This way, I can log on and check when assignments are due and when I finish them I can check them off. Overall, I find that going to such events is super beneficial and I see myself attending more on different subjects.

  8. The thing that I did to get beyond the dorm and beyond the classroom was that I went to the Maine Mall and Target with my best friend who I haven’t seen in forever. It wasn’t a school activity but it still got me out of my dorm room and not bed rotting. It is going to be hard to talk about something that I found interesting or useful but I will try. We went to Old Orchard Beach first but we stuck out, since the palace playland was closed and they were taking the rides apart for the winter. We then looked to see if the Funtown was open and it wasn’t so yet again we stuck out. At least the mall was open so we went there and walked around and spent some money. We got some food and went back to her car and just talked for a while and then another friend met up with us and they joined the conversation. We went to Target, got some things that were needed and then they brought me back to campus. This is absolutely something that I would do again. I got to hang out with friends, catch up and just fool around. I can’t wait to see them again and miss all my friends a lot so it helped that I got to see them for a little bit.

  9. For the off campus get involved event, I traveled to downtown Biddeford where an info season was being held about the shorelines and coastal ecosystems of southern Maine. This was a unique event because there were multiple professors from UNE there running the event/info workshop. The goal was to integrate the Universities’ work into the community and get public opinion on the work they were doing. I find this to be a very cool thing to do because it allows people in the community to understand and participate with the university, which in turn, integrates the university and its students into the real world, so to say.

When I went to the cafe in Biddeford, I got to meet some interesting and I talked with a man from Saco about the project, but also about the books we had read. The cafe is also a bookstore. It turned out that we had both been reading the same series, and that we both enjoyed it. I learned that this guy knew the authurs father when they were kids, which I found to be very interesting.

The actual presentation itself was also interesting, and I learned new things about what is going on with the sand dunes around Saco, Biddeford, and Kennebunk from the professors I may eventually have for programs I’m interested in. I got to meet multiple new classmates that were involved in the type of thing I would also like to be involved in, which is piloting drones. I talked with them for a while and the next day I even got to go on a flight with one of them, which was really fun.

  10. I went to a UNE women’s volleyball game on Wednesday evening! It was held in the Forum. It was my first time going to any sort of sports event in years, I’ve never seen myself as a sports oriented person. I tried basketball in middle school, I was okay at it but the social aspect was complicated. So, I have mixed memories with sports. However, this volleyball game changed my mind! I had a wonderful time. We didn’t win the game, but I realized that that’s not what it’s about. I remember thinking to myself how glad I was to not be in my dorm, and instead be out & having fun. I really enjoyed being a part of something, even if it was just a crowd. And, that’s what I realized when we lost. It’s not about winning, it’s about being a part of something bigger than you, a community. I would absolutely go to a similar event in the future! I’m really looking forward to the hockey season. I’ve never been to a hockey game, but I’ve heard that they’re a lot of fun here.

  11. This week I went to Tuesday Night Trivia! I’ve always been a huge fan of trivia, so this was an activity I knew that I needed to try out. The trivia event was held in the commons, but there was a much bigger turnout of people than what I expected, meaning there were barely enough chairs. But somehow my friends and I were able to get a table. I liked how there was a variety of trivia, from movie scenes, short clips of music, and then also a category of random knowledge questions. While I enjoyed the idea behind the event, I thought that many of the questions were either way too simple or that the genre of the trivia was too repetitive. Even though I didn’t enjoy it as much as I thought I could, I am still looking forward to going to more in the future, and am hopeful that the trivia topics will switch up every now and then. Overall, while the trivia itself wasn’t my favorite, I ended up having fun just by spending time with my friends. This activity also gave me something different to do outside of my dorm, which I liked because it meant that I was able to go a little outside of my comfort zone by trying something new.

  12. Do something that could help you as a student.
What was the activity and where was it held?
I participated in a study group with other girls in my dorm.
What did you like or find interesting/useful?
We had discussions and worked through homework together (being able to bounce ideas off the other people in the room).
Would you attend another similar event in the future – why or why not?
Yes! I would participate in more study groups in the future because I found that I was incredibly productive and I was able to get a deeper understanding of the material that I was studying.

  13. There were not any events in particular that I was able to attend/ that I was interested in from the last couple days. On Thursday after my classes finished I did go to the Danielle Ripich Commons to get my homework done rather than just going home. I have found that I like studying here because I am able to sit and enjoy the view and I seem to get my work done faster here compared to when I just go straight home after class and end up just procrastinating.

  14. Since getting caught backed up I didn’t go to any events during the week, but I spent the time with my dad that week. My dad wanted to take me out and I said sure, and we did just that. It was a much needed get together with my dad as it’s been a while since we have been out together. During that time, he was just teaching and telling me valuable life skills and things I should remember during college. One of the things he told me was to stay consistent. The more that I was consistent with my work and focused the more I could attain in life and to better myself and wellbeing. Also, he told me to just keep going strong and never quit. They’re come times when I just want to stop and just want to quit but that just won’t be beneficial for me. It’s just taking the easy way out and I’m not going to help myself down the long run. Buy yeah that was my week. My dad is one of my biggest supporters in life and having these one-on-one times with him is great for me and I really hope I could have more of those days with him to help me through my college life.
