  1. Journal 6 Outside of your dorm

Since last week I have not really done much outside of school. I went tide pooling with my MAR 105 class. This was an in school event but it was so fun. I found urchins and dogwhelks which I have never found alive in the wild. I found many dog whelks and 2 urchins. 2 people in my lab also found HUGE green crabs. One was 3 inches across its caripase!!! I also went to the Maine mall on a double date with 2 friends from high school and my boyfriend. I could not find any jeans I liked that were not 1 gazillion dollars so I did not buy anything besides a bag of roasted oyster garlic chips. I am excited because this weekend I get to see my little cousins for the first time since I left. I am working really hard to get all of my homework done and get everything ready to spend a weekend with my family. I am enjoying my job at the pizza and pasta station in the dining hall. It is a nice distraction from school and keeps me on my feet and moving. I also love cooking and working with my hands so it works out perfectly. I also downloaded Stardew Valley on my switch light so hopefully I can get good and my friends and I can start a community farm.

  2. First Year Seminar – Journal #6

On Tuesday September 9th, I went to the Blue Bolt Field to watch the girls field hockey game. The game started at 7:00pm. I went with my best friend Riley, we have been friends since junior year of high school. I was so happy to go to the game, because I haven’t really watched field hockey before. The game was fun to go to, and I learned how to play field hockey from my friend Riley because she played in high school. The main rule I learned is that players have to wait until they are in the white circle to score. During the game, President James Hebert sat with us. He was really nice, and it was funny to watch Riley explain to him what the rules of field hockey were. President Herbert is a really nice guy and seems to want to get to know all of the students. I definitely want to go to another field hockey game again. It was a good experience and I know if I go to another school game I will have just as much fun.

This week for my beyond activity I went to trivia in the commons again. They do this every Tuesday night, so I think I will continue to go each week. This week, it was at 8pm instead of 9, which was nice. Because it’s at an earlier time, I am much more interested in going each week. They did different categories than last week, which was nice. There was a round about Harry Potter, songs that start with ‘the’, answers that were a single letter, and then the last round was movies. Last week I went with a big group of people, but this week I just went with my roommate and another one of my friends, who I also went to high school with. Because there were not very many of us, we didn’t get very many questions right, but we still had fun. I felt like I knew more answers to questions than I did last week, so that made it more enjoyable. Other than trivia, I also drove to Topsham to meet up with my boyfriend, because it is pretty much right in the middle of us, distance wise. It was nice to leave campus for a few hours and get to spend time with him. It was only an hour drive for both of us, so we plan on meeting up for dinner more often. Being able to spend some time outside of my room and off campus makes life feel a little more normal. Overall, I hope to do both actives more often.

  4. This week I attended a scuba club meeting. During the first week, I went to the involvement fair and decided to join the scuba club. This Wednesday was the first meeting and I am excited to be a part of it. At the meeting I learned that I won’t be able to get my scuba certification until next fall. However, there are still some snorkeling trips that I can go on along with a trip to the New England Aquarium in Boston. I am super excited about this because I love snorkeling. I have only been once, when I was 12 but it was super fun! I am also excited to go to the New England Aquarium because I’ve been there and it was one of the reasons why I chose my major. I also learned that UNE will pay $700 worth of your scuba certification. This is amazing as I am a broke college student and I didn’t want to spend a thousand dollars on a scuba certification. The only fees that I will have to pay are the two hundred fifty towards the scuba certification and then an annual forty in insurance. Through this club, I will be able to experience scuba diving for the first time and be able to see underwater ecosystems.

  5. For my MAR 105 Lab I got to go out to Biddeford Pool with other people in my class so that was really fun. I got to look at all sorts of marine life that I don’t get to see on the coastline of Maryland so it was all really interesting to learn about! Even though it was in school we finished our lab early so we got to walk all along the rocks with my lab friends. I also got to go on a late night adventure with a few of the people on my floor! We went to Insomnia Cookies after I got off practice because I really wanted a cookie so we drove all the way to Portland at 8:30 at night. I’d say it was worth it. I had a lot of fun singing Katy Perry in the car and learning new things about the people in my dorm. Oh and I got 4 cookies if anyones wondering, I got S’mores, peanut butter chocolate chips, oatmeal and chocolate, and regular chocolate chip!

  6. I went to an Outing Club meeting Wednesday evening. It was held in the St. Francis room. There was such a big turn out, there weren’t enough chairs for everyone! I’ve been looking forward to the Outing Club from the moment I found out about it, which was before I had even applied to UNE. I remember meeting the treasurer of the club, he was my UNE tour guide back in April. He told me the Outing Club was about getting outdoors, which caught my attention fairly quickly. Sign me up for anything related to the outdoors! I also met the president of the club on the Trailblazer trip I went on over the summer, she was actually my Trailblazer Orientation Leader. She plugged the Outing Club many times, which piqued my interest even more. The Trailblazer trip was like a taste of what Outing Club is all about, and I had a wonderful time on it, so I knew I had to sign up for the club once school started. It felt almost kismet, the club had been mentioned to me several times. At the club meeting they talked about even more activities that were right up my alley, including hiking, my favorite. I really enjoyed the environment during the meeting. All of the leaders of the club seem really into what they do, and every one attending was so excited! I will absolutely continue to go to the meetings. I especially look forward to making friends that are also interested in & excited about the upcoming club adventures. It was my first time going to a club meeting at UNE, and it’s inspired me to go to more!

  7. On Wednesday I went to my first Outing Club meeting! This was the first official club meeting I’ve been to this semester, and overall, I would say that it went pretty well. There were A LOT of people there. I was a little embarrassed that I showed up a few minutes late, but there were still more people coming in during the meeting, so I got over it very quickly. First, we started with outing club bingo, an activity used to get to know other people in the club, old or new. Afterwards, the club officers presented the meeting slideshow, which covered some of the ways we as members could get involved and the various hikes and trips that were going on in future months. I was really interested in a lot of the activities being shown, but also felt very under experienced compared to the people around me. I’ve only ever hiked a few times, so I would not consider myself an expert by any means, and never before this meeting have I seriously considered trying activities like rock climbing in real life. But now, even though I am still somewhat hesitant, I still want to be more open in having new experiences and overcoming my fears – Two things that I believe this particular club will be good at helping me with.

  8. I recently attended the first meeting of the Creative Writing Club. It was held in a classroom in Decary Hall. I enjoyed attending this club meeting because I got to meet other people who also loved writing. Writing, for me, is a way of processing my emotions, and a way for me to express all of the thoughts and ideas I have in my head. Being around other people who thought the same was very nice. We also did a game of Round Robin, and I enjoyed that as well. I would definitely attend another meeting in the future, as I want to improve my writing, and be surrounded by people who want to do the same thing. I also want advice from more experienced writers on my own works: I am prepared to “kill my darlings”. I’m looking forward to the next meeting.

  9. What was the activity and where was it held?
On Wednesday, the women’s soccer team had an away game against Lasell. The bus ride was about 2 hours long.
What did you like or find interesting/useful?
I was productive with my homework on the bus. I have found that when I am stuck in one seat whether it be on a plane or in a car, I am more productive than usual. Maybe it’s because I can’t really move from my space, but I like to think that I am just a working hard in that moment.
Would you attend another similar event?
There will be many more long bus rides to and from colleges that we will play throughout the season. We have a 3-hour bus ride tomorrow (9/13), so I will be getting a lot of studying/homework done in that time.

  10. Since last class I didn’t really do too much extra and ended up doing a lot of homework the last couple of days. I was going to attend the student nursing association event that was going to be held on 9/11 but it ended up getting canceled. I will try to attend this event once they reschedule it for a different day.

  11. The activity I attended this week was a meeting for club ultimate frisbee. This meeting was to see if our forms were in order, go over safety information, and to learn how to handle concussions. I thought this activity was useful, as I learned my physician had forgotten to check something off on my physical. I’m likely to attend another event like this in the future, as I think they’re mandatory for club sports.

  12. For me beyond class activity that I did this week was go fishing. I like to take some time to myself and have a peaceful time. I always need a break, and it was a very much needed one just to have a chill time and reflect on where I’m at and how I’m mentally doing overall.
1 always go to the Jetty in Camp Elis for fishing and it’s just my getaway spot. Anyways in this little getaway I reflected on how I was doing in school and how work is going. It is starting to feel a little overwhelming for me and I think I need to work less and focus more on my schooling. I also believe that I’m just stressed about everything going on so it’s starting to affect me, and it can be a struggle. Overall, I think I really needed to take a break and have some fun so I can keep it up and continue my goals.

  13. This week for my beyond the classroom, beyond the dorm, I went to the gym for the first time. This is something that I have wanted to do for a while. I would like to continue to go to the gym and get into the habit of going. It was obviously held in the weight room. I liked that everyone was friendly and that if I wasn’t sure how to do something someone was willing to show me. I for sure would like to go again because it can be beneficial when going. I can meet some new people. I have seen someone also with diabetes like me and they smiled at me. I am hoping to get the workshops done. I have looked at some and they seem interesting. I was going to go to the one on the 10th but I didn’t make it back in time for it. I feel that that workshop may have benefited me because sometimes I struggle with reading and understanding the wording of some things.
