  1. Today (10/1), Kenzie, Lincoln, and I met in the Avila Lounge to work on the beginning phases of our brochure. In Tuesday’s class, we decided on the theme of sustainability here at UNE. In our group, we started by splitting up the work evenly; Kenzie created a physical layout on paper and online of how our brochure will look, Lincoln took pictures to use later on, and I typed up a layout for the topics we are planning to cover. So far, we have come up with a few slogans for our first panel, and for the other panels, we have decided that we want to discuss UNE’s initiatives in Recycling (panel 2), Renewable Energy (panel 3), Clean Transportation (panel 4), and the campus’s online Sustainability Map (panel 5). So far, we have a good plan for the layout of our brochure, but there’s still more work to be done. We are planning to interview and get quotes from different staff, faculty, and students, but we still have yet to figure out what questions to ask them. In addition to this, we still need to take a few more pictures around campus, but we are planning on doing that together during our normal class time on Friday. Overall, I really enjoy my group, and I think that we have made great connections with each other and are all very motivated to put equal work into this project.

  2. Since Tuesday my group mates and I have been texting about where we can get pictures and quotes and who is going to get it. I am getting pictures of the Marine Science Labs and quotes from the lab directors about the labs if possible. Sam is getting a quote from her RA and photos from around campus. Emily is also going to get pictures of her exercise science labs and a quote from someone. It has been a lot of planning and dividing up responsibilities based on access to labs. Since we are 3 different majors it helps a lot as we can get many different labs with very different research going on.

  3. Journal #13 (Brochure Reflection)
On Tuesday afternoon, I emailed the members of my group, Brandon and Anders, telling them about the times I was available to meet this week, as well as what I think we should talk about at our first meeting. They have not gotten back to me yet, but I have started coming up with ideas on how we could go about the project. I created an outline that has each of the three themes on it, and below each theme I created subheadings of what the theme is, the questions we will need to answer, possible people we can interview, and possible image ideas. We have not decided on what theme to do, and I cannot reach my partners even after emailing them twice, so I filled in this outline for all the themes. Once we meet at some point, I think having this outline of ideas can help us choose which one will be best for us and how we can go about starting the project. I researched the different ways these themes are shown at UNE and the people that oversee the departments, which we could possibly interview when it comes time. All the themes have a lot of different parts to them, so I think it is important to look at each one before decided which one to stick with. It’s frustrating and difficult to not hear back from my group.

  4. Journal #13:

As for progress on the project, my group and I are doing well. We had a meeting on Wednesday and discussed the main points that we needed to start on. We first discussed what subject we wanted to do. Out of civic engagement, research and community, or sustainability, we chose sustainability because it was the one all of us valued the most. Next, we agreed on the most important aspects of sustainability around UNE. We then sorted those aspects into the different panels on the rubric and talked about who could gather the different parts of content to add to the panels. We also decided on how the formatting will look and if we should add some extra material to the brochure to make it better. After these decisions were made, we ended the meeting and have been thinking about things to add.

  5. Journal #13

The progress for this project has been going well. My group and I met in the library and discussed how we want to start our project and how we wanted it to look. We started panel one in our project. I sent Rin and Phoebe a link to Canva, where we will be making our brochure. The topic we picked for our project is civil engagement. We also discussed who each would interview for the project. I think our project will turn out amazing in the end. I am excited to work with my group more to see what else we will add to our project.

  6. So far the project has been going well. My group and I have picked out what theme we are going to do for the project and have decided who will do what interviews and who we will be interviewing. We have also been messaging about when we are going to start taking the photos and where. Overall, I would say we are off to a good start with the project.

  7. For the first few days of this project, Emily, AG, and I decided to split up work based on “opening doors” for this project. My job over the past few days was to get a photo of the UNE logo and get a quote from my RA about her research opportunities and how research impacts UNE students. My RA is an animal behavior (pre-vet) major, so my group thought that she would be a good student for the quote because she has the same major as me.
To get the photo of the UNE logo, I went to the forum and took a few photos of the large UNE logos throughout the building. I edited the lighting and shadows, so it looks more professional and created a digital sticker of the logo as well.
My RA’s quote was: “UNE is a hub of knowledge, growth, and research. Research at UNE allows students to get hands-on experiences working closely with other students and their professors. Academic help is always available as well which creates a sense of community here. SASC (Student Academic Success Center) allows students to brainstorm, conduct practice exams and quizzes, and create promising outcomes. UNE’s community and research keeps students engaged, interested and prepared to face their dreams in the working world.” – RA Hannah

  8. For my brochure project this week, I have been able to interview one of the dining hall staff on sustainability. Her name was Bella, and she was working at the front counter. In order to prepare for this interview, I came up with a couple of questions. For example, I wrote, How is the dining hall working to be as sustainable as possible? And in her response, she said “By using the reusable plastic to-go bins instead of disposable to-go containers and cups.” She also said that most of the resources that the dining hall uses can be composted. Another question I asked was how does sustainability at UNE and specifically in the dining hall impact the community outside of the university? Her response was, “People outside of UNE also come here to eat food so a lot of the time they will also take a to-go box and it broadens the impact of the ideals here.” My final question for her was what does sustainability at UNE mean to you? And she responded with “It’s really important to have an amazing community with such strong ideals, and it is nice to know that the university is working hard to be as sustainable as possible.” This interview was helpful to get some inside insight on what is going on in the dining hall. It is also important to hear how others appreciate the ideals at UNE as well.

  9. Since our last class my group mates and I have talked more about our theme and how we want to portray that. We have taken pictures of different things around campus to add to our brochure. Sam found our logo picture and got an interview, AG emailed the marine science research lab and I am getting pictures from the exercise science lab. We met on Friday to talk more about our project layout and how we wanted to divide more of the work and what else we could do for our project.

  10. My group and I were unable to meet before class today, so instead we met at four. We chose a color theme for our brochure, implanted graphics, and worked on interviews and division of work. We chose to take mostly photos of the UNE logo, as none of us really have a talent for drawing. My group is very dedicated to working through this in a timely manner, which I appreciate. We have decided to meet up again at two on Monday, and we plan to work more on layout and quotes from interviews.

  11. My group met Friday afternoon to discuss our next steps moving forward with this project. We planned out who we are going to interview, what questions we’re going to ask, and how to do the brochure. We even started the brochure, and we completed a couple panels! We found a good layout with an aesthetic for it that we all like. We were able to get a good picture of what we plan to do next, and we found another time for us to meet again: 2pm on Monday. It was good to be able to meet with my group, and I look forward to seeing them again soon.

  12. On Wednesday October 1st I really just familiarized myself with the assignment. I was able to set up a meeting time with my MAR 105 Professor to Interview her on our topic. I sat in her office and asked her all the questions about sustainability here at UNE and we talked for a good 30 minutes. I was able to record her answers so I can go back and listen to our conversation and write some quotes down for the panels. I started to plan what my panel was going to look like I’d use some of her pictures of her studying over in Antarctica as like a background photo as well as planned some headlines and layouts.

  13. Lincoln, Abby and I got together in the Avila lounge split up the work and started to figure out what we needed. I started a physical version of the brochure. we talked about potential people to interview and what photos we might want to do.

  14. To get an early start on the project me and my group agreed to meet up and get the busy work that would’ve been annoying later on like taking all the photos. Unfortunately our plans hit a rock in the road and we weren’t able to follow through so instead we spent time over the phone coming up with a script for our interviews with the goal of finishing them for Wednesday. I went ahead on my own and started to look at the different brochure templates to get an idea on how we should layout the information we collect throughout the duration of this project.
